Surana College, one of the leading institutes affiliated to Bangalore University accredited by NAAC with ‘A’ grade kicked off a campaign in the city to observe World Malaria Day. Surana students came up with “MUST-QUIT-O” campaign to create awareness on the cause and preventive measures against the deadly disease ‘Malaria’. Yediyur lake was targeted by the students for this campaign and this cause was also supported by Sri N.R.Ramesh, Former ruling party leader, BBMP, Sri Yashwant Savarkar,KSPS, ACP-Law and Order, Bengaluru-South and Dr. Nagabhushan K H, V P, Medico Marketing services, Microlabs Ltd and Dr. Prabhu, Micro Labs & Former Member of UNICEF.

India is one of the 10 countries in South-East Asia region where Malaria is endemic and claims thousands of lives. UNICEF says that in India, of the 1.2 billion people, 80.5 reside in malaria prone areas and as per details on National Institute of Malaria Research Website, North-eastern states mostly Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Tripura and forested parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and few districts in Karnataka and Gujarat report high malaria burden. India Ministry of Health released their provisional data on vector borne diseases for 2014 and it showed that there were 535 deaths due to malaria last year. As a total nationwide, 1,070513 malaria cases were reported among the 36 states/UTs in 2014. Chief Guest, Sri N.R.Ramesh, Corporator and Guest of honour, Sri Yashwant Savarkar, KSPS ACP-Law and Order, Bengaluru-South also shared their concern about this vector borne disease and how citizens need to take steps towards Swachh Bharat and support clean India drive. Ms. Archana Surana, Founder and Managing Trustee of Surana College discussed about the epidemic disease which has taken toll on millions of life worldwide. “I am happy that my students have taken this initiative to create awareness. I urge every citizen to keep their surroundings clean and take precautionary measures to prevent malaria and adopt sustainable sanitation practices to support clean India, nation free from vector borne disease. “As a Bangalorean, I am very happy to see Surana students taking part in such social initiatives every year apart from just being concentrated on exams and career. Malaria being a fatal disease is effecting India as much as South Africa and young Indians need to be aware of the cause and preventive measures by which we can eradicate Malaria from India. Today nearly 7.5 lakh people die every year because of malaria “said Dr. Nagabhushan K.H, Vice President – Medico Marketing Services, Microlabs Ltd.About 80 students of Surana College along with faculty members participated in the campaign and visited Yediyur Lake which is also one of the oldest lake in Bangalore. Students actively participated in the campaign by spreading pesticides across the lakes and also shared information leaflets regarding the do’s and don’t to keep Malaria at bay. Students started a rally from their Basavanagudi campus shouting slogans holding placards and banners with messages to encourage people to keep their surroundings clean. Students also distributed mosquito repellents in the nearby slum areas. Aimed at spreading awareness on Malaria, this initiative by Surana College substantiates their commitment towards environment and society.
